The Polytronix PolyvisionTM Switchable Privacy Film package consists of a layer of liquid crystal sandwiched between two polyethylene terephthalate (PET) conductive films. In its rest state, it is a translucent white. When the pdlc-film-manufacturingelectricity is switched on, the glass instantly changes to transparent. The power drawn by a window is roughly equivalent to operating a 25-Watt light bulb.

The liquid crystal privacy glass is constructed in a way similar to the construction of laminated glass. The outside skins are made up of glass (normally 5 or 6 mm annealed glass) each side, then a PVB interlayer is inserted on each side to trap and hold the liquid crystal privacy film.

The liquid crystal privacy film is made up of electrically conductive coatings, a polymer matrix and liquid crystals. This film has electrical wiring to be connected to a transformer to supply power for the “on” (clear state) mode.

Technical Details

Polytronix PolyvisionTM Switchable Privacy Film is available in sizes up to 72” x 120” (1828 mm x 3048 mm). It uses state-of-the-art liquid crystal technology to change from clear glass (75% light transmission) to a white translucent (55% transmission) with the flip of a switch. Power draw is very low – just 0.5 watts/sq ft, and film needs to be powered on for a minimum of 4 hours per day.

(It’s worth noting that a typical solar (photovoltaic) panel installed in North America has an average output of about 10 watts/sq ft, meaning that one single 25” x 54” solar panel could potentially offset the power usage of three large (72” x 120”) windows.)

Sustainability

PolyvisionTM Switchable Privacy Film is a sustainable product that can lower energy consumption and energy costs. It improves the use of natural day-lighting, lowering energy use for illumination. By reducing solar heat-gain, “smart glass” also reduces air conditioning demands.

Polytronix is aware of the importance of limiting our carbon footprint, and works proactively with our suppliers and application partners to ensure that our glass/film products are eco-friendly.

PDLC film-enabled glass is re-usable – glazing can be removed from its original installation and re-used, fully functionally, in another building

Liquid crystal components are organic and biodegradable

Installed film blocks over 99% of ultraviolet radiation
Reduces solar heat-gain, lowering energy consumption for HVAC

Very low power draw (less than 0.5 watts/sq ft.)

Reduces materials-consumption used to make curtains, shutters, blinds, projection screens, and dry erase boards

Eliminates the need for dust-collecting draperies, blinds, or shutters, improving indoor air quality (IAQ)

Proven service life of greater than 10 years (10-year old installations are still fully functioning)
