The Polytronix PolyvisionTM Switchable Privacy Film package consists of a layer of liquid crystal sandwiched between two polyethylene terephthalate (PET) conductive films. In its rest state, it is a translucent white. When the pdlc-film-manufacturingelectricity is switched on, the glass instantly changes to transparent. The power drawn by a window is roughly equivalent to operating a 25-Watt light bulb.

The liquid crystal privacy glass is constructed in a way similar to the construction of laminated glass. The outside skins are made up of glass (normally 5 or 6 mm annealed glass) each side, then a PVB interlayer is inserted on each side to trap and hold the liquid crystal privacy film.

The liquid crystal privacy film is made up of electrically conductive coatings, a polymer matrix and liquid crystals. This film has electrical wiring to be connected to a transformer to supply power for the “on” (clear state) mode.

Technical Details

Polytronix PolyvisionTM Switchable Privacy Film is available in sizes up to 72” x 120” (1828 mm x 3048 mm). It uses state-of-the-art liquid crystal technology to change from clear glass (75% light transmission) to a white translucent (55% transmission) with the flip of a switch. Power draw is very low – just 0.5 watts/sq ft, and film needs to be powered on for a minimum of 4 hours per day.

(It’s worth noting that a typical solar (photovoltaic) panel installed in North America has an average output of about 10 watts/sq ft, meaning that one single 25” x 54” solar panel could potentially offset the power usage of three large (72” x 120”) windows.)
