1. The Off State (Opaque/Frosted): When no electrical current is applied, the liquid crystals are randomly oriented. This state causes isotropic light scattering because the refractive index of the liquid crystal droplets differs from the polymer matrix. The result is a frosted, diffused glass appearance, rendering the glass opaque and obstructing visibility, providing instant privacy. 

2. The On State (Transparent/Clear): When an AC voltage (typically 30–90 VAC) is applied, the liquid crystal molecules align with the electric field. This alignment matches the refractive index of the polymer matrix, which allows light to pass through with minimal scattering. The glass instantly turns clear, connecting the interior to the outside world or adjacent spaces. 

The speed of this transformation is extremely fast; Polyvision has a response time of less than 5 milliseconds when shifting to the transparent state at room temperature. Response time when removing the electricity and allowing the liquid crystals to relax and return to the opaque state is slightly slower, around 70 milliseconds or less.   Polyvision® Privacy Glass specific technology is highly effective for applications requiring on/off privacy control due to its high privacy opacity and lack of haze when clear. While PDLC is the focus, other smart glass types exist, including electrochromic, photochromic (reacts to light intensity), and thermochromic (reacts to temperature), each offering unique features.
